Culinary Journey: ITALY

Wednesday, 16 March 2011

Ciao,

Food is a very important part of Italian culture and life. The people of Italy take great pleasure in sharing a good meal that is made with top quality seasonal ingredients, freshly sourced and simply prepared.

Italian food is made from the heart and is bursting with passion.  Cheese, wine and coffee are a major part of Italian cuisine as well as pasta. Pasta includes noodles of various lengths, widths and is categorized in two basic styles; dried and fresh.  Dried pasta varieties most commonly found in New Zealand are listed below:

When most people think of Italian food, they generally think of pasta and pizza.  Here at Gregg's, we have a wonderful repertoire of Italian delights that we think they are too good to keep a secret.

For a truly authentic meal pop an Italian opera CD in the stereo and start your journey with an antipasto platter of salami, prosciutto, ham, olives, figs, marinated mushrooms, sundried tomatoes, roasted peppers, premium cheeses and slices of fresh bread,  or treat your guests to  bruschetta with a selection of tantalising toppings including:

Warm Lamb and Rocket

Tomato

Prosciutto, Blue Cheese and Walnut

Following this make your main meal choice from the list below and remember to serve along side garlic bread or Rosemary and Olive Focaccia.  It is wise to mention here that it is common for Italian meals to have between 3 and 6 courses, including 2 dessert courses, hence why traditional Italian meals are served on smaller plates!

Bacon and Mushroom Carbonara

Basil and Garlic Ricotta Stuffed Chicken Breast

Classic Beef Lasagne

Classic Napoletana

Gregg's Spaghetti Bolognaise

Italian Country Chicken Casserole

Macaroni Cheese

Meatballs with Spicy Tomato Sauce

Mixed Mushroom and Chicken Risotto

Oven Baked Courgette and Tomato Risotto

Spaghetti with Rocket, Parmesan and Chilli

Spicy Tomato Soup

Tuna Bake

The first dessert course should be a selection of cheese and fruits, then it's onto Dolche, the second dessert course with something a bit more substantial such as Tiramisu.  Tie up the evening with Gregg's Espresso Roast Instant Coffee served with Choc and Nut Spiced Biscotti and don't forget to finish with a glass of limoncello liquor.  Not only does it taste delicious, it is said to help the digestive process.

Impress your friends and family tonight with delizioso, authentic and fresh home cooked Italian cuisine.
