Date & Walnut Loaf

This scrumptious loaf can be used for morning teas or lunch-boxes, or can make a great dessert.

How to Cook

  1. Place the dates, water, brown sugar and butter into a medium saucepan. Cook over a medium heat until the sugar dissolves. Bring to the boil, reduce the heat to low and simmer for 2 minutes. Stir in the baking soda and set aside to cool.
  2. Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease and line the base of a large loaf tin – approx. 11cm x 21cm x 6cm.
  3. Sift the flour and Gregg's Ground Cinnamon and Gregg's Ground Mixed Spice into a large bowl. Add the eggs, cooled date mixture and walnuts.
  4. Mix to combine then pour into the loaf tin. Bake in a pre-heated oven for 50 - 60 minutes or until a cake tester inserted comes out clean.
  5. Cool on a cake rack.


  • 250 g dates, chopped
  • 1 ½ cups water
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • 75 g butter
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 2 cups self raising flour
  • 2 tsp Gregg's Ground Cinnamon
  • 1 tsp Gregg's Ground Mixed Spice
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 70 g walnuts, chopped
