Until modern times, cloves grew only on a few islands in the Maluku Islands (historically called the Spice Islands), nevertheless, they found their way west to the Middle East and Europe over 2000 years ago.Cloves are very strongly flavoured with sweet, bitter and hot tones and the astringent flavour leaves a numbing sensation in the mouth. Used all over the world, cloves are an integral part of many spice blends including garam masala and Chinese five spice. Ground cloves are commonly used in biscuits, cakes, stewed fruits and pickles.
