Sichuan pepper or Szechuan pepper is not a true peppercorn, but a small red berry. It has a lemony, spicy flavour and produces a numbing/tingling effect on the lips and mouth.
Sichuan pepper originates from the Sichuan province in China and is essential to the region’s cooking.
The spice can either be used whole or ground into powder.
